Anzac biscuits with vintage typewritten recipe

We are living in strange times. With strict social distancing rules and public gatherings limited to only two people, traditional ANZAC services have been cancelled. There are still ways to commemorate our fallen soldiers this ANZAC Day though from home.

Driveway Dawn Service

RSLs across the country are asking people to hold their own dawn service at the end of their driveway, to light a candle or decorate a lantern, and keep the ANZAC spirit alight by continuing to commemorate Anzac Day in isolation.

Bake some biscuits

Since we are all stuck at home this year for ANZAC Day, why not bake some traditional ANZAC biscuits to commemorate the fallen this year?

Some great recipes we have found online that you might like to try:

There are some great substitutions for gluten and dairy-free options like quinoa flakes for oats and olive oil for butter so experiment and see what works best for you and your dietary needs.

Craft ideas

Decorate a milk bottle lantern, make an Anzac wreath made from egg cartons. Use traditional symbols like poppies, rosemary and candles to create a special and sacred space for remembering the fallen.

Do some family research

Platforms like Ancestry.com offer free trials, and they often expand the collections available at peak times like Anzac and Remembrance Days.

If you have an ANZAC in your family tree, why not look them up and see what you can find about them? You might be surprised!

Watch ABC TV or iview

This year will be an Anzac Day like no other. The ABC is inviting you to mark Anzac Day in a safe and special way. This year, like every year, no matter where you may be, you can find all your Anzac Day coverage on ABC.

To acknowledge the sacrifices of our servicemen and women, you can watch the ABC’s live broadcast the National Commemorative Service from 5.30 am this Anzac Day. This will include a minute silence around 6am, so you can pay your respects wherever you may be; in your living room, at the end of your driveway, on your balcony or at your farm gate.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning,

We will remember them.

Lest we forget.
