Description

The Public Guardian can be appointed as a person's guardian by the Guardianship Division of the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal and, depending on the guardianship order, the Public Guardian may make decisions on behalf of the person in areas such as accommodation, medical treatment, dental treatment or services. The Public Guardian is a substitute decision maker, not a substitute caregiver or case manager. A decision made by a legally appointed guardian should be treated as if it were a decision made by the person with disability. The Public Guardian will also advocate for the services and supports needed by the person under guardianship. The Public Guardian also provides general information to the community through the Information and Support team. This team can also provide free community education sessions. The Public Guardian operates the Private Guardian Support Unit (PGSU) which provides support and advice to private and enduring guardians.
