Description

Established by the Australian Parliaments in 1986. Responsible for the administration of the Australian Human Rights Commission Act 1986. Racial Discrimination Act 1975, Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Sex Discrimination Act 1984. Responsibilities fall within four main areas; public awareness and education; anti-discrimination and human rights complaints; Human rights compliance; and policy and legislative development. The Commission runs the National Information Service (NIS) which provides information and referrals for individuals, organisations and employers about a range of human rights and discrimination issues. This service is free and confidential. The NIS cannot provide legal advice.
