Two yellow "L" learner plates

There are certain milestones in life which we aspire to achieve, driving is often one of them. Driving is good for our mental health as it gives us a sense of achievement, of independence and belonging in the community.

If you have passed your driving test, congratulations! For those who are still on the road to completion, the long slog to secure your Ls might seem like an eternity.

In NSW, there is now a course called the Safer Driver Course. This course will give you 20 hours credit towards your logbook hours (making the dream of driving a bit closer) and will make you a safer driver.

What is the course?

The course teaches you how to reduce road risks by developing safe driving behaviour. It is also designed to help you understand more about speed management, gap selection, hazard awareness and safe following distances.

To attend the course you need to:

  • Be aged under 25
  • Have completed at least 50 hours of logbook hours of actual on-road driving
  • Have carried out some night driving logbook hours

Course Cost

The course costs $140, which includes a 3-hour group discussion with other learners, and a 2-hour coaching session in a vehicle, along with another learner.

You will need to make a booking with a Safer Driver Course provider to complete the course.

You can find a full list of providers here: Safer Driver Course Providers List

Did you know? You may be able to attend this course for free. The NSW Government offers some places for those who may be financially disadvantaged.

To be eligible for a free place you need to:

  • Hold a valid learner licence
  • Be aged under 25 years
  • Have completed a minimum of 50 logbook hours of actual on-road driving (excluding any 3-for-1 bonus hours) and should include night driving
  • Hold a current Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card issued by the Department of Human Services – Centrelink.
