2019 International Day of People with Disability

International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) aims to increase awareness, understanding and acceptance of People with a Disability. It is held on December 3 ;each year. Communities, friends and groups come together to celebrate the achievements of People with Disability

Celebrating the IDPWD aims to highlight disability awareness, acceptance and understanding for the community. Each year has a new focus on how society can strive for inclusivity. 

The 2019 theme is ‘Promoting the participation of persons with disabilities and their leadership: taking action on the 2030 Development Agenda’. The theme focuses on the empowerment and the leadership of persons with disabilities to take action on the inclusive 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which pledges to ‘leave no one behind’, recognizing disability as a cross‐cutting issue, to be considered in the implementation of its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The United Nations will also have a spotlight event on ‘Sport for all for peace and development’, as an opportunity to discuss sport to promote peace and sustainable development by empowering persons with disability.

This year the United Nations launched a Disability Inclusion Strategy as a foundation for transformative progress on disability inclusion through all pillars of the United Nations.  

“I want the United Nations to lead by example and invite you to join me in moving decisively to achieve the goals of the United Nations Disability Inclusion Strategy. ”

As part of IDPwD, communities, organisations and schools are encouraged to come together and break down barriers and improve practices for People with Disability. The International Day of People with Disability website has resources available, event registrations and tips. Event Planning Kits are produced for Schools, Communities and Workplaces for ideas to help celebrate and plan events. Also on the website are curriculum-based resources, across subject ranges, for teachers to broaden lesson outcomes.
